During more than 50 years in the Memphis construction community, Patton & Taylor Construction Company has worked on projects of every stripe – from hotels, apartments, shopping centers, and offices to non-profit facilities, municipal buildings, and historic properties. Founding partners Clyde Patton Jr. and Bruce Taylor have overseen the development and construction of three retail centers, four hotels, five office projects, as well as more than 7,300 multi-family housing units and 30 subdivisions, but they only consider that success to be motivation to keep building.
Currently Patton and Taylor are constructing the 251-unit Thornwood Apartments, including a multi-layered parking garage with residential above that is part of the enthusiastically welcomed mixed-use development in Germantown. This new construction is part of an evolving vision for suburban development that promotes community engagement and walkability. They’re also working on phase 8 of Michael Lightman’s Fieldstone apartments, which once complete will be the largest contiguous multi-family development in Tennessee, and Jackson Walk II for Henry Turley Company in Jackson, Tennessee.
In recognition of their success and ongoing efforts, Clyde Patton and Bruce Taylor were recently given the lifetime achievement award by the Memphis chapter of Lambda Alpha International, a land economics fraternity that they themselves were instrumental in bringing to the city in 1976.
With roots this strong, Patton & Taylor foster meaningful partnerships with community businesses that support and complement their vision. That’s meant a relationship with Financial Federal dating to the Bank’s beginnings, including personal deposit accounts and multiple commercial real estate deals.
“They don’t panic when you have a bump in the road,” said Patton. “They take the long view about business cycles.”
“They want to deal with integrity and high moral value, and I think that’s something they evaluate when they put together a loan,” said Taylor. “They understand that banking is a personal relationship, not a paper relationship.”
