Building for the Future
As a third-generation homebuilder, David Clark got his start in the field young. Very young.
“I was 12 years old when I first started sweeping out homes for my dad, picking up lumber and materials,” said Clark. “I learned what step came next on the build based on what I was picking up on the job site.”
That early experience paid off when Clark entered the industry professionally, since he had already built recognition and respect from his peers. When it came time to start his own business, however, Financial Federal Bank supported taking that step independently. Clark reached out to Sam Hubbard for his first construction loan in 2002.
“I said I knew my dad needed to co-sign, and Sam said, ‘This is your business, you don’t need his name on your loan.’’’ recalled Clark. “They gave me a chance when no one else would.”
David Clark Construction began by working primarily on remodels of homes his family had constructed, operating under the idea that the original builder knows the structure best. Fifteen years later, the company is featuring a house in the VESTA Home Show for the third time.
“It’s always a tight deadline, trying to put the latest designs and trends in there, but it’s rewarding to bring something new to Memphis and provide people with really positive awareness of our industry.”
